- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
For Frosting (Optional):
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar

In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set this aside.
In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, which should take about 2-3 minutes.
beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and finish with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix, as this can make the cake tough.
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and place them on a wire rack to cool completely.
If you're making frosting, in a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, and beat until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
Once the cakes are completely cool, you can frost them with your prepared frosting or any other frosting of your choice.
Decorate the cake as desired and enjoy!
Feel free to get creative with your cake by adding fruit, chocolate chips, or other flavorings to the batter, or using different types of frosting and decorations.
